What’s new: Among a flurry of recent reports about greatly increased GNSS interference at sea, the Republic of the Marshall Islands Registry has published some best practices for safe navigation.
Why it’s important: GNSS interference has resulted in collisions, oil spills, vessels unintentionally violating territorial seas, and in some cases being seized. Worse outcomes are also possible such as the loss of life, the loss of vessels, etc.
What else to know:
- The Marshall Islands is has the world’s third largest ship registry (4,500 vessels) after Liberia (4,900) and Panama (5,100).
- The registry has long been very active supporting and advocating for mariners.
- The article also includes the registry’s regional threat assessments which are interesting.
