PNT from 4G & 5G – Russia testing in battle, China likely developing

What’s new:  Two items, possibly related.

  1. Info that Russia is experimenting with PNT from cellular on its drones in Ukraine for GPS-denied environments.
  2. An item about China creating a military 5G network that can be deployed on mobile assets.

Why its important: It is easy to deny or spoof GPS/GNSS signals, and may only be a bit harder to deny other signals from space. Both Russia and China are very adept at such denial and deception and have terrestrial PNT systems to augment space-based assets. They are continuing to investigate and develop such systems.

What else to know:

  • The article from China talks about keeping drones “connected,” but does not say anything about PNT.
  • Researchers have shown that 5G can be used for PNT. If you would like to see more than this link, just enter “5G” in the search box on our website.
  • 5G is not considered in many PNT alternatives analysis because the PNT capability has not been developed and its attributes for things like accuracy, integrity, continuity, and resilience are as yet unknown.
