What’s new: Prosecutors have charged a man found with a jammer at the Warsaw airport with endangering aviation safety.

Why it’s important:

  • Using a jammer at the airport could interfere with operations, delay flights, perhaps even cause accidents on the ground.
  • Using one on an aircraft in flight could have even more serious consequences.

What else to know:

  • The media report below did not say whether or not the man had a ticket and was planning to board a plane. Only that he has spent several hours at an airport cafe or restaurant.
  • Thanks to alert RNTF members Guy Buesnel (Spirent) and Maksim Barodzka (GPSPATRON) for highlighting this news item.
  • Ukrainians in Poland with jammers and other electronics is getting to be a theme. See GPSPATRON’s post here.
  • A reminder that Poland is right next to Kaliningrad and has been the object of Russian wrath for growing closer to the west, and of a lot of Russian jamming and spoofing.

A Ukrainian man detained at Warsaw airport during the Christmas holiday has been charged with endangering aviation safety by using a radio jammer, Polish prosecutors said on Friday.

The 23-year-old suspect, identified only as Ilia S., spent hours at one of the eateries at Warsaw’s Chopin airport on December 26, which raised the suspicions of security officers.

He was detained and a court ruled that he be arrested for a month.

The Ukrainian had on him a device for radio jamming, designed for frequencies reserved for aviation communications and navigation, investigators said.
