What’s new: A report that a ship hit a mine and exploded in the Strait of Hormuz. Many details are not clear.

What else to know: 

  • The ship may have intentionally left the traffic lane that is said to be clear of mines.
  • Navigation aboard the ship was undoubtedly degraded because of jamming and spoofing.
  • Commercial vessels operate with minimal crews on the bridge. Those crews have become accustomed to navigating with GPS and electronic charts. It takes more people on the bridge and a lot of training to navigate safely using radar, visual sightings, and other methods that are not GPS enabled.

There was no immediate official statement from Iranian authorities regarding the incident.

An oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after colliding with a naval mine, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-linked Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday.
Tasnim said the tanker struck the mine after leaving the route designated by Iran in the strategic waterway.

There was no immediate official statement from Iranian authorities regarding the incident.
