Blog Editor’s Note: This report by C4ADS outlines in exceptional detail extensive Russian spoofing and jamming in the Black Sea and Middle East. Some interesting takeaways from the report:
- Over 9,000 instances of ships being spoofed to airports
- A strong linkage between the movement of Russian President Putin and spoofing activity
- A discussion of what might be called “smart jamming” in which false GPS signals are sent that do not necessarily cause receivers to report malfunctions, but also don’t allow them to calculate a position
- Discovery that GPS/GNSS disruption can be detected by unclassified civilian sensors in low earth orbit.
