What’s new: An info graphic that shows many of the ways GNSS impacts/supports/is integrated with utilities and other systems we use everyday.
Why it’s important: Educating the public and leaders on this is an essential first step. Next we need action to reduce western society’s critical over-dependence on GNSS.
What else to know:
- The US and other western nations all share the dependencies shown in the info graphic.
- The UK and France are beginning to address the problem by establishing terrestrial broadcast (eLoran) and fiber-based timing networks.
- We are impressed (and glad) that the authors avoided trying to estimate the economic impact quantitatively. To date most such estimates have been seriously in error on the low side because they only considered some direct impacts in some sectors. More accurate estimates would likely be so high that the numbers are really hard to conceive.
