What’s New: Huge drone show in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China by a famous artist was destroyed by “jamming” with hundreds of drones crashing on land and in the water.

Why It’s Important: The incident shows:

  • Authorities can and do consider unknown drones a threat.
  • Many types of drones can be easily disabled.
  • Drones can be a hazard as they fall from the sky.
  • Use of drones is still a relatively new phenomena. Operation and coordination remains a challenge for many.

What Else to Know:

  • A camera drone entered the area to film the display, but authorities were not notified, considered it a rouge, and “jammed” it. This impacted the display drones also.
  • The presumption in several news reports was that it was GPS jamming, which is the most common.
  • Each drone only cost around $30 (US) but there were so many the total loss was around $1.4M.
  • See video here.
