What’s new: Galileo’s OSNMA (Open Service Navigation Message Authentication) is operational.

Why it’s important: Users are able to authenticate signals and prevent many spoofing attacks on their receivers.

What else to know:

  • The US National Space-based PNT Advisory Board recommended a similar service for GPS that would work for receivers that could be connected to the internet. A formal white paper about a GPS High Accuracy and Robustness Service (HARS) was published in May 2023.
  • Establishing HARS for GPS would require several departments to work together and a small budget.
  • No champion within government has been identified. The lack of an effective governance framework for GPS and PNT has been cited by many as the reason.

There have been several media pieces about ONSMA being operational, but we like the following post on LinkeIn as a great intro and overview:

The European Unionโ€™s hashtagGalileo satellite navigation system has officially declared its OSNMA (Open Service Navigation Message Authentication) initial service operational today! This feature introduces a data authentication mechanism for Galileo Open Service users and is available free of charge to Galileo users worldwide.

What Can YOU Do? How Can YOU Help?

PNT is the quiet backbone of everything but too many leaders still don’t see the risk.

But you do. You understand the systems, the dependencies, the failure chains. That insight is rare โ€” and it’s exactly what your country needs right now. Contact your government leaders and industry decision-makers and tell them resilient PNT isn’t a feature โ€” it’s the foundation everything else depends on.
