What’s new: The president has nominated Sean Plankey to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) at DHS.

Why it’s important: CISA is the agency at DHS that coordinates/ leads PNT issues for the department. While they don’t have a large staff devoted to PNT at present, the few folks they do have are well engaged and doing all they are able.

What else to know:

  • Plankey has a respectable background in PNT.
  • In one of his previous roles we had the opportunity to meet with him and discuss PNT resilience at some length.
  • He is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (usually a good thing).

In the latter portion of Trump’s first term as president, Plankey served as principal deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response at the Department of Energy, overseeing energy sector engagement, preparedness, response efforts and research aimed at safeguarding U.S. energy infrastructure.

Prior to that, he served as the director for maritime and pacific cybersecurity policy at the National Security Council, and also held cybersecurity leadership roles at U.S. Cyber Command.

What Can YOU Do? How Can YOU Help?

PNT is the quiet backbone of everything but too many leaders still don’t see the risk.

But you do. You understand the systems, the dependencies, the failure chains. That insight is rare — and it’s exactly what your country needs right now. Contact your government leaders and industry decision-makers and tell them resilient PNT isn’t a feature — it’s the foundation everything else depends on.
