Blog Editor’s Note: David was a pillar of the PNT community, founding member of the RNT Foundation, long-time advisor, and a great friend. His passing in 2019 left a permanent gap in the international community.

We helped the Royal Institute of Navigation establish a fund in his memory to enable students to attend navigation related conferences and symposia.

We continue to support the fund and encourage you to do also!

See the below note we received from the RIN for an update on the fund’s activities and how to contribute.

The Royal Institute of Navigation is pleased to report that the Prof David Last Tribute Fund to enable student participation in, and presentations at, navigation conferences and symposia remains active and open for donations. Last year the two top papers presented at the RIN’s NextGenNav mini-conference were awarded scholarships to attend the Navigation 2021 meeting in Edinburgh.

This year’s NextGenNav conference takes place in Nottingham on 20 October and the top paper will be offered a scholarship to attend a major navigation conference in 2023 (either ENC2023, the RIN Baska GNSS Conference or the 11th RIN Animal Navigation Conference.

For further fund information and to donate online: https://rin.org.uk/donations/fund.asp?id=19676. Thank you for your support to the next generation of PNT professionals and to the memory of Prof David Last.

What Can YOU Do? How Can YOU Help?

PNT is the quiet backbone of everything but too many leaders still don’t see the risk.

But you do. You understand the systems, the dependencies, the failure chains. That insight is rare — and it’s exactly what your country needs right now. Contact your government leaders and industry decision-makers and tell them resilient PNT isn’t a feature — it’s the foundation everything else depends on.
