Exposing GPS Spoofing in Russia and Syria – 9,000+ Incidents in New C4ADS Report

March 27, 2019

Written by Editor

Blog Editor’s Note: This report by C4ADS outlines in exceptional detail extensive Russian spoofing and jamming in the Black Sea and Middle East. Some interesting takeaways from the report:

  • Over 9,000 instances of ships being spoofed to airports
  • A strong linkage between the movement of Russian President Putin and spoofing activity
  • A discussion of what might be called “smart jamming” in which false GPS signals are sent that do not necessarily cause receivers to report malfunctions, but also don’t allow them to calculate a position
  • Discovery that GPS/GNSS disruption can be detected by unclassified civilian sensors in low earth orbit.

Full disclosure – C4ADS is an RNT Foundation member, and RNTF participated in development and review of this report.

What Can YOU Do? How Can YOU Help?

PNT is the quiet backbone of everything but too many leaders still don’t see the risk.

But you do. You understand the systems, the dependencies, the failure chains. That insight is rare — and it’s exactly what your country needs right now. Contact your government leaders and industry decision-makers and tell them resilient PNT isn’t a feature — it’s the foundation everything else depends on.
