What’s New: RNTF President Dana A. Goward’s brief comments (6 minutes) to the U.S. President’s National Space-based PNT Advisory Board last week.
Why It’s Important: In the comments he:
- Describes the foundation’s purpose and activities
- Thanks individual and corporate members
- Discusses recent Chinese activity building their High-precision, Ground-based Timing System
What Else to Know:
- Some answers to the questions at the end about why China is going to so much time, effort, and expense building the system. It will:
- Provide hyper-accurate time to underpin any number of current and future technologies, including 5G & 6G, autonomy, advanced land mobile radio, advance IT processing, etc.
- Protect the entire nation from disruption of signals from space, no matter what their source.
- Make BeiDou and other Chinese PNT space assets less attractive targets for adversaries, so therefore safer and more reliable.
- Expand China’s PNT tech lead over the U.S. and other western nations.
- Expand China’s strategic advantage by ensuring that an attack on BeiDou services will have much less impact on their homeland than an attack on GPS services would have on the U.S. homeland and others.
- Continue China’s tactical advantage in the region providing exceptionally resilient PNT for forces (for exampled during an invasion of Taiwan) when space-base signals are blocked.
