Blog Editor’s Note:  Happy Saturday!

We have had some interesting, though not severe, solar activity recently. Here is an refresher on coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from Physics Girl.

She mentions the Carrington Event but doesn’t relate how some telegraph offices actually caught fire.

Looking forward scientists estimate that in the next 10 years there is a 35% to 45% chance of a CME large enough to disrupt GPS service for several days, and a 4% 12% chance for a much worse Carrington-like event that could damage satellites.

BTW – Our best wishes and prayers for Physics Girl who is struggling with long COVID.
