Electrical Grids Concerned about GNSS Timing

Technologists from the National Institutes of Standards (NIST) report that all the operators of electrical grids they have contacted have reported some problems using GNSS timing. About 20% report that this has caused problems with operations, mostly offline analysis and commissioning delays.

The comments were part of a presentation to an April 17th workshop on Timing Receiver Resiliency co-sponsored by the RNT Foundation and ATIS. The purpose of the workshop was to identify barriers to greater adoption of timing receivers that are more resilient to interference like jamming and spoofing, and ways to overcome those barriers.

Workshop leader Dr. Marc Weiss will be presenting the workshop’s findings to the National PNT Advisory Board at their meeting in Baltimore on the 16th of May.

What Can YOU Do? How Can YOU Help?

PNT is the quiet backbone of everything but too many leaders still don't see the risk.

But you do. You understand the systems, the dependencies, the failure chains. That insight is rare — and it's exactly what your country needs right now. Contact your government leaders and industry decision-makers and tell them resilient PNT isn't a feature — it's the foundation everything else depends on.
